The COVID-19 pandemic caused by a novel coronavirus has radically transformed the lives of masses and has introduced uncertainty into major aspects of national and global society, especially schools and academic  concerns causing numbers and numbers of learners to be required to stay at home due to the closure of the  educational institution at all grade levels. The weight of the choices left on the shoulders of education leaders  when they must set their footing with seemingly impossible choices that balance health risks associated with  in-person education, to which is why they settled in virtual learning. Considering the rapid transition of most  classes to an online platform, this academic year will continuously affect achievement.
However, despite the obvious that the pandemic has greatly and negatively affected the effectiveness of  education, Brokenshire College Toril never let up. The school made it clear that the disruptions in the students’  lives won’t prevent them from growing and learning— won’t prevent us from building vital skills for our future.  As students in the said school, we saw that regardless of the crisis and the nationwide shut down of  classrooms, the school provided a safe and effective alternative with no face-to-face instructions. Studying from the comfort of our own home, allowed us to relax and take advantage of the flexibility of online learning. In spite of the limited resources and cautions to take, BCT held contests and events that not only adhere to  IATF minimum heath protocols, but at the same time was productive and enhanced the skills we didn’t know  we had. Due to that, we accomplished to see the silver lining in the pandemic and enjoyed myself in ways that  I can. Throughout all of the virtual competitions, my classmates and I were able to coordinate and improve our  teamwork. It also triggered cooperation and collaboration between all of us.
At the same time, numerous students find it challenging to center their attention on the screen for a long period  of time. The prominent chance of students being effortlessly diverted by social media and being preoccupied by  multiple sites on the internet is not thoroughly impossible. Also, the key necessity to online learning is to have a  stable internet connection, to which is not completely accessible to the entirety of the student body. Another  essential must is obtaining electronic gadgets, the ones requiring a fairly expensive amount to cost; far  from easy affordability. The environment where the student is learning and the capability they hold in order to  understand the lesson practically by themselves are just the barest of minimums we ought to consider.
Though, in the course of numbers of months where we have been learning online, never have we once felt as if  the education was lacking nor was it displeasing. Yes, there were some ups and downs, apparent faults and  flaws, but it is nothing compared to the advantages the school has provided us. The certainty of it being in the  middle of adjustment to the new normal is there as well. In this fast-paced world where we are left no choice  but to go along with it, we found peace within the service of Brokenshire College Toril.

School life is one of the most fun and memorable times in one's life. However, what happens next after it ends? We are in school to prepare ourselves for our future career, but when the time to choose comes, we are usually in a quandary about which path to take. If you've ever experienced self-doubt, rest assured it's completely normal to question your career path and there will be several ways that can help you decide on a career.
Last March 20, 2021, Brokenshire College Toril aired the last episode of its BCT Wellness Webinar Series with the theme: "Forward and Beyond: Envisioning Life After School" with BCT's OSA head, Riomey A. Marata, invited as the lead speaker to share her story, and talk about shaping wise career paths.
Mrs. Riomey A. Marata has inspired us by sharing her story about her struggles and failures. She wanted a computer-related job but considering her financial situation and the difficulty of her preferred career, she opted to be a teacher instead. She had a rough start, as she failed her first licensure exam all while struggling to adjust because she didn't even want that career in the first place. However, she did not let that failure and doubt keep her from pursuing her chosen career, and that determination has helped her become the successful person she is today.
Mrs. Marata provided us with 7 steps on how to choose a career: (1) perform a self-assessment, (2) identify your must-haves, (3) make a list of jobs to explore, (4) research and narrow down your list, (5) get training and update your resume, (6) find and apply for jobs, and (7) continue growing and learning. She also left a lot of things for the students to ponder.
It was truly a wonderful end to the BCT Wellness Webinar Series, and it would not have been possible without the speaker, Riomey A. Marata, the BCT Wellness Team, and the rest of the BCT community. It was amazing from the first episode down to the last episode. What a great privilege it was to be able to take part in this fun and educational series!

Breaking barriers and overcoming challenges, Brokenshirians made excellent performances in various activities despite the limits faced during E-Sportsfest 2021 on January 22 – 23, 2021.

With the theme “Breaking barriers and achieving excellence through e-sports.”, Brokenshirians were all out in Mobile Legends, Online Chess, Online Scrabble, Online Billiards, Mr. and Ms. E-sport Tiktok, and Banner Making.

A breathtaking moment took place between Grade 12 Hope against Grade 12 Obedience, both fierce for winning the Mobile Legends championship. In the end, Grade 12 Hope survived and conquered the battlefield in best-of-five with the standing 3-2.
“Excited as well as nervous.” that’s what Jeric Martinez felt throughout the game, a Grade 12 Obedience member. Out of all the teams registered in the competition, only these two remained on top. Both teams executed clever gameplays and counters that awed the commentators and the viewers.

In online chess (high school), Aaron Daniel Alabata from Grade 9 Peace is the current champion. He exceeded the limits and defeated competitors from different grade levels. With the swiss-system tournament set up, time control of 60 minutes, and standard game type, he won with the standing 3-0-1. On the other side, in online chess (elementary), Prince Bryan Saquibal, a grade 3 student, dominated the entire elementary level and held as champion.

Quick-mindedness and strong vocabulary lead to Ashley Kaye Ramillano’s success, the online scrabble champion from Grade 7 Love. She remained on top in the semi-finals and finals that happened on the same day. The matches were close, Ms. Glory Fie Betonio said, the online scrabble facilitator. But Ashley’s friends were very supportive, she added.

A fierce one-on-one battle arose in the finals of the online billiards eight-ball pool between Louie Jay Empasis of Grade 12 Goodness and Norenz Kristian Villas of Grade 9 Amity. Unique strategies and outstanding aims are displayed, but in the end, Louie Jay Empasis won and claimed the victory with the standing 7-3.

“I am happy to be the champion, of course, because, amongst the good players out there, I won” Mr. Louie Jay said. “And I never expected it because all I wanted was to represent my section,” he continued.

BCT’s Mr. and Ms. Tiktok Transformation Challenge aims to showcase students’ virtual talents by letting them create their artistic and fun transformation videos where they should wear proper and decent sports attire accompanied by make-up, effects, and transitions.

At the pre-school level, Jermielene Jane Ramos charmed the judges with cuteness and earned the championship. At the elementary level, the pairing champion was Remlan James Gabutero of Grade 6 and Fiona Lorraine Nuyad of Grade 4. Similarly, in junior high school, Vince Barrioquinto and Desiree Gale Soliva of Grade 10 Vison was the pairing champion. Lastly, at the senior high school level, Angelo Daugdaug of Grade 11 Reverence and Frances Jhan Durango of Grade 11 Honesty were the champions.

In banner making, each section made a banner using their section name. Their artwork was presented with proof that it’s original and they are the ones who made it. Only a few banners are selected and displayed during the culmination day.

At the junior high school level, Grade 10 Wisdom is the champion. Then, Grade 7 Love as 1st runner up and Grade 8 stewardship as 2nd runner up. At the senior high school level, Grade 12 Compassion took the championship. Then, Grade 11 Felicity as 1st runner up and Grade 12 Diligence as 2nd runner up.

All in all, the event was successful in attaining its objectives to break barriers and achieve excellence!

INTERNATIONAL ROBOTHON 2019
Beginning in the year 2018, Brokenshire College Toril is one of the first initiators among the educational institutions in Davao City to incorporate robotics program in their courses. Varying on grade level, the elementary students in the said school are trained in basic programming while complex programming is introduced in high school. They are taught of robotics for an hour a week enabling them to learn both the software and hardware structures of robots.
Brokenshire College Toril has its students focused on physical robots. Physical robots are computer-programmed machines capable of carrying out specific series of tasks automatically. And as the First Eduspec, Inc. provides BCT with the VEX IQ robotics curriculum and materials, building and programming physical robots through the Robotic Software became more attainable.
On September 28, some students of BCT competed in the Philippine Robothon 2019 at Mapua University in Manila. It is an annual thematic competition of First Eduspec, Inc. which showcases innovation towards designing, building, and programming robots.
Brokenshire College Toril might not have bagged championship in the national event; however, they have brought home two awards and an invitation to participate in the STEAM International Challenge 2019 on November 24 in Guangzhou, China.
“It felt so surreal to be invited because I never thought that I will be chosen as one of the school’s participants for the International Robothon,” Rustom Olaso shared.
BCT’s Robo Aces Alpha team is composed of Grade 5 student DK Rophe Paniamogan and Grade 6 students Jan Seanne Phillip Galos and Onyxa Luiz Asuncion. Meanwhile, team Robo Aces Bravo is composed of Grade 10 students Niel Roy Enriquez and Rustom Olaso and Grade 11 student Joshua Comia. Both teams are trained by their coach, Sir Harold Verbal.
As for the formal preparation, the teams scheduled training sessions on the Robotics Laboratory. Days before the competition, they underwent mock competition typically done to practice skills that would be applicable in real world applications. In that way, they are able to drill their presence of mind under pressure.
Eduspec “Science. Technology. Engineering. Arts. Mathematics (STEAM) International Challenge” is an annual competition that aims to heighten the interest and engagement of the students of Asia on STEAM. Concepts of the competition bring their STEAM skills to life and put their learning and continuing 21st century skills such as teamwork and computational thinking to test.
The theme for the current year is “2050 Food Effect” in which participants are tasked to build and program an agricultural robot. It was a combination of trial and error method, analytical thinking, and hopeful prayers that the teams’ robot performances improves. BCT knew they would stand a place on the competition. Just like how the invitation had a sudden approach towards them, the announcement also left the school’s teams jumping and shouting out of joy. It was Brokenshire College Toril from Philippines who stood mighty on top 91 competing teams from the countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and China. BCT’s team Robo Aces Alpha won the Distinction Award and emerged as the fourth placer in high elementary VEX IQ category. On the other hand, team Robo Aces Bravo aced the competition and notched the overall championship in the high secondary VEX IQ category.
As they stood up and walk to the stage, honor and pride was shouting for this glorious moment. Everyone may have seen them carry the Philippine flag and BCT banner while accepting their trophy and awards but little did everyone know how the faith and service were braced with it.
“Winning an international award is not about how prominent the school is, but how skillful and hardworking its participants are. Winning excuses no one, so is losing. We must learn how to remain positive when we lose and to remain humble when we win,” Rustom Olaso stated as he shared his realizations.
Let us celebrate not just for another award gained by Brokenshire College Toril but also for our beloved country, Philippines.
Behold the triumph! Brokenshire College Toril – the International Robotics Champ!
