Project Baka-One headed by Matias John Mercado brought its award-winning initiative to Island Garden City of Samal and planted 500 mangrove seedlings in the coast of Peñaplata last January 20, 2024.
Participated by the organization’s executives, members, volunteers, alongside Brokenshire College Toril (BCT) faculty and other student organizations, the event was mainly sponsored by Greenheart Impact.
Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) representative Katherine Ranay expressed her appreciation lauding the efforts of young people in the said environmental conservation activity.
“To see the efforts [in conserving the environment] of such young leaders like you guys, I am very thankful that maybe our future is brighter than we think,” Ranay told THE SPARK.
The CENRO official also expressed her hopes for future environmental projects to be focused on planting threatened mangrove species such as the aegiceras corniculatum or the saging-saging.
Baka-One’s Mercado revealed that the organization is set to launch other environmental projects besides mangrove planting soon.
Mercado also serves as THE SPARK’s editor-in-chief.
